Catholics may be sick of clerical sex abuse stories, but they can't be ignored

By Greg Erlandson – Our Sunday Visitor

We’ve received several emails and letters from readers, pleading, essentially, “Enough!” of our coverage of the clerical sex abuse crisis. One said she was “weary of the continuing barrage of information on the sexual scandal in the Church. I know that it has happened; I know that the Holy Father is doing everything in his power to respond to it. I just do not think that we need to hear so much about it.”

Even as the co-author of a recent book on Pope Benedict XVI and the crisis, I find myself wanting to agree. We are all tired of this topic. It is a bad news story that won’t go away. Many of us have been dealing with news of the scandals since 1985 — a quarter of a century.

  1. A good friend of mine took his own life 3months ago.. He was abused by a Christian Brother .. He left behind two kids and a loving Girlfriend !! Am i sick of the Clerical Sexual Abuse scandal ? I'll be raising this issue for as long as it takes ! The Pope should have the decency to resign over the way he covered up abuse also!!

  2. Hello Christy,

One wonders what it is about child sex abuse that leads some of the victims to suicide. Certainly society should be in uproar at a crime that can lead to such a tragic end. But alas many in society only seem outraged and outspoken when Church sex abuse is exposed. I’m sure you’re well aware nearly all child sex abuse occurs somewhere other than the Catholic Church. So when you say you’ll be raising the issue for as long as it takes are you referring to child sex abuse in general or just child sex abuse that occurred in the Catholic Church?

And why do you think the Pope should resign? He appears to have done nothing wrong and indeed has been a force for change within the Church. For you to say otherwise indicates you are either ignorant of the facts or a liar.

If you are truly interested in the truth I recommend the following link which in turn links to other articles on Pope Benedict and his handling of the Church’s sex abuse problem.
